Overview and Purpose

Neurodivergent individuals are significantly more likely to experience misunderstanding, exclusion, and environments that inadvertently cause harm.

They experience the world through uniquely wired nervous systems that shape how they think, feel, and respond to their surroundings. When these differences are not recognised or supported, the nervous system may adapt in ways that reflect survival, protection, and the impact of trauma.

This Epione course explores the critical intersection between trauma and neurodivergence, supporting professionals to understand how trauma may present differently, the role of sensory processing in distress and regulation, and how environments can either increase threat or promote safety, wellbeing, and resilience.

Grounded in trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming principles, this course supports a vital shift—from managing behaviour to understanding the nervous system, and from compliance to compassion.

Learning Outcomes

This Trauma & Neurodivergence course helps practitioners to:

  • Understand the Role of Sensory Processing in Trauma Responses: Participants will be able to recognise how sensory sensitivities in neurodivergent individuals may influence their trauma responses.
  • Create Supportive Environments: Participants will learn how to design/modify environments that minimise sensory overload and promote wellbeing and resilience for neurodivergent individuals with trauma histories, ensuring that strategies are both neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-sensitive.

Trauma Training Enhanced Practice

  • Understand Neurodivergence and Trauma: Participants will be able to define neurodivergence and trauma, and explain the intersections between these concepts, including how neurodivergent individuals may experience trauma throughout their life-course.
  • Recognise the Effects of Trauma on Neurodivergent Individuals: Participants will learn to identify signs and symptoms of trauma in neurodivergent individuals, taking into account variations in behaviour, cognitive styles, and social communication.
